Sultan Mustafa II, since the beginning of his reign in 1695, was confronted with the effects of the loss of considerable territories in Central Europe. The commerce, military and foreign affairs of his state he aimed at returning the Ottoman Empire to the Carpathian Basin. He managed to muster a very large army which he took to lead himself. However, despite the initial gains and victories in the war with the Holy Roman Empire at Lugoj and Begej, as well as the capturing of Lipova and Timisoara, the Sultan didn’t manage to reinstall Ottoman rule in those areas. The outcome of the Battle of Senta in 1697 shattered the Ottoman intentions and Mustafa’s ambitions to recover the northern border hence he had to sign the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699.
